Wee Wine Tour

Santorini, Greece Day 3

We started our last full day in Greece off with an English breakfast by the beach. (Yes, we had English breakfasts in Greece).

Sarah and I decided to make our own mini wine tour that day, so after breakfast we hopped on the bus to bring us to our first winery: Santo Wines. It was a bit windier up at the winery than we thought it would be, but luckily we got a table in the sun and it was much more comfortable. Looking at the menu, the package wine tastings, which is what we ideally wanted to do, were a bit too expensive. So instead, we opted for two or three individual tasting glasses. I know I said this in a previous blog, but the wine in Greece is so good. We also had a gorgeous view overlooking Caldera (the volcano island) while we enjoyed our wines.

After spending a good amount of time at Santo Winery, we walked about 10 minutes down the road to the second and final winery on our wee tour called Venetsanos Winery. This winery seemed a bit less laid back than the first one, considering the first thing we were asked was if we had a reservation. Thankfully we were still able to do a wine tasting that day despite not having made a reservation.

We were sat down at a table outside with again, a stunning view overlooking the water. Our second surprise at this winery was that the waiter came over and we were informed the winery only carries a total of 6 wines. Taking this into consideration, Sarah and I decided to split the 4 wine tasting package.

Our waiter returned with the 4 wines and was very informative about the origins of each of the wines. He also had a great sense of humor and even gave Sarah and I a cork each from the bottles as a souvenir, and brought us free breadsticks! The wines were very good at this winery as well. One thing I noticed about Greek wines is that almost all of them claim to be dry, but to me they did not taste very dry at all. I'm not a big fan of dry wine, so either their 'dry' wine really isn't dry, or my tastebuds have changed. Who knows. Either way, I very much enjoyed Sarah and I's mini wine tasting tour.

We eventually left the second winery and had to wait a while for a bus back to Perissa (no surprise there). When we finally got back we walked down to the beach to have one more cocktail on the beach, but as we were paying the owner and his nephew offered us another one for free! So we sat and chatted with them for a while, and they also offered us a taste of Ouzo which we had been planning on trying at dinner anyway. Ouzo is a Greek liquor that tastes very similar to the French liquor Ricard, as both are flavored by anise.

After chatting for a while Sarah and I were getting a bit chilly so we finally returned to our hostel, got changed, and grabbed some dinner. Going into our last night we had 2 roommates, one from New York and one from Canada. It was nice to hear some familiar accents and it was interesting hearing about all of their recent traveling.

The next day Sarah and I went to our favorite bakery one last time to get breakfast and then checked out of our hostel and hopped on the bus to Fira. In Fira we had one last gyro, and then took the bus to the airport.

Greece, especially Santorini, was one of my favorite places I have visited so far and I definitely hope to return one day.
