Free Sounds Good to Me

Dublin Day 2

Another great thing about our hotel was that there was complimentary breakfast, and unlike the hostels I had been staying in, it was much more than just bread and jam. There was sausage, eggs, muffins, toast, cereal, fruit, yogurt, and juices. I was very impressed and appreciative of such a good meal when I had gotten used to bread for breakfast. (Holiday Inn Express on O'Connell Street, 10/10 would recommend).

We checked out of the hotel by 11am and walked to Trinity College. I had seen pictures of the old library in the college which looked like a set out of Hogwarts so I was really excited to see it. Sadly, after wondering around trying to find it, we finally found it and discovered that it costed 12 euro to go in. That's crazy! Needless to say, we weren't paying that much so we left without seeing it.

The next place we were planning on going was the National Museum of Ireland - Archaeology, but when we arrived we were informed it didn't open for another hour, so we walked to a nearby park (St. Stephens Green) and walked around and sat for a while until the museum opened. The park was very pretty and even though it was cloudy, it was a relatively nice day.

At 1pm we headed back to the museum and walked through it for a while. When we were first going there, I didn't realize that that was the archaeology museum. I quickly learned that there were 4 National Museums of Ireland and the one I had wanted to see was the one dedicated to National History. Oops. The museum on archaeology was alright, but the majority of it wasn't all that interesting to me. However, there was one really cool exhibit of bodies that were found in bogs in Ireland and other parts of the world. It was very interesting to read about how scientists were able to figure out how these people passed away, and to see how parts of their bodies had been preserved over the years since their deaths.

We grabbed some lunch at a nearby sandwich shop and then walked to the museum I had originally wanted to go to: The National Museum of Ireland - Natural History. This museum was filled with different species and animals from Ireland. It ended not being quite as interesting as I thought it would be, but it was still cool to walk through and see (plus it was free). The museums in Dublin definitely don't compare to the ones in London though.

After sitting outside for a little while to rest our legs and backs, we walked next door to the National Gallery of Ireland which was an art gallery. I enjoyed the gallery, but I could tell Jelly didn't appreciate the art in quite the same way I did, as he spent most of the time sitting on the benches provided.

Sadly, we arrived when there was only about 35 minutes remaining before the gallery closed for the day, so I didn't get to explore the entire building.

We still had a few hours left before we had to catch the bus, so we walked back towards O'Connell street and walked down to the Custom House which was a building with a green dome that had caught my eye the day before.

We spent the rest of the time before the bus in a coffee shop across the street from where the bus would pick us up, and we ended up taking the bus an hour earlier than when we had planned so we could get back to campus a little earlier.

Jelly and I had a really nice time in Dublin and although it was quite expensive, I'm really glad we went and were able to explore the city together.
