Santorini, Greece Day 1
We woke up at 4am for our 7am flight to Santorini. Luckily I ended up sleeping for a solid 4 or 5 hours despite having a full room for the first time since we'd arrived, but Sarah only managed to sleep about an hour. She said that at midnight all the church bells were ringing and there was so much yelling in the streets to celebrate Easter. I really don't know how I slept through that.
When we arrived at the Santorini Airport, which is probably the smallest airport I've ever been in, we had no clue how to get to our hostel. We didn't know which ones were the local buses and which one to even get on, so we ended up finding a private shuttle service that brought us to our hostel. We paid a bit more than I would have liked, but I think it saved us a lot of confusion.
Our hostel was probably one of the nicest ones I've stayed in. It had a very beachy vibe which was nice being on an island. Our room only had 5 beds and we were lucky enough to have the room to ourselves the first night. The two men who ran the hostel were also so nice and helpful. The hostel even had a pool! My only complaints were the fact there was no shower curtain in the shower so water went everywhere, and the fact that there were small ants all over the floor, but it's an island so you kind of have to expect to see some bugs. Overall it was a very good hostel experienced though.
We walked to a nearby little bakery to grab something to eat for breakfast. There were so many delicious-looking cookies and pastries! And the man who owned it was very sweet.
Afterwards we decided to walk around the town we were staying in a bit. The town is called Perissa and is situated right next to a beautiful black sand beach. The guys at the hostel had informed us that since it was Easter Sunday, all of the restaurants would be roasting lambs on the beach. They weren't kidding. Up and down the beach there were dozens of lambs cooking in preparation for the traditional Greek Easter dinner.
The first half of the day was pretty cloudy which was unfortunate, but as Sarah and I were enjoying our first cocktail on the beach, the sun finally started to peak out and it ended up turning into a very beautiful sunny day.
I ended up going back to the hostel to FaceTime Jelly for a little while, and then sat outside by the pool to soak up some sun while Sarah went back to the beach. After that much needed relaxation, we got ready and headed out to find our Easter roast. We ate at one of the traditional Greek restaurants right across from the beach and it was a very good (and filling) meal. It was really cool to be able to experienced Santorini in this unique and cultural way.
